GLOBLASTAR OPENS SIXTH NORTH AMERICAN SATELLITE GROUND
STATION IN ALASKA
Early opening of satellite gateway in Wasilla brings
enhanced Globalstar voice and data coverage to Alaska
region
Globalstar, Inc., a world leader in providing mobile
satellite voice and data services to business, announced
today that its sixth North American satellite ground
station or gateway went into operation on June 21st,
more than one week ahead of schedule. The new satellite
gateway, which is located in Wasilla, Alaska, provides
Globalstar voice and data customers with access to ground
based public telephone and data networks along with
the added advantage of activating their multi mode satellite
phones and data modems with a local 907 Alaska area
code.
Although Globalstar has offered satellite coverage
in the region since 2000, the opening of the new gateway
will provide enhanced coverage throughout much of Alaska,
northwestern British Columbia, the Yukon as well as
the Bering Sea and northern Pacific maritime region.
This satellite gateway represents a multi million
dollar investment in the Alaska marketplace and many
of our customers and distribution partners throughout
the surrounding region have been anticipating the enhancements
the gateway will provide to our high quality satellite
voice and data services, said Jay Monroe, Chairman
and CEO of Globalstar, Inc. Mr. Monroe added, We
have been extremely pleased with the response from the
regional marketplace since launching a series of local
promotions in preparation for the opening and we expect
to see the same kind of enthusiasm continue now that
we are operational.
In preparation for the gateway opening, Globalstar
dealers and distributors have been promoting Globalstar
satellite service with a special offer for those Alaskan
land based and maritime users who require remote telephone
voice and data communications well beyond traditional
landline and cellular coverage areas. Current Globalstar
customer segments in Alaska and the surrounding region
include; commercial fishing, maritime transport, aviation
(bush pilots), oil and gas, government, heavy construction,
emergency preparedness and business continuity. Many
individual consumer and recreational users may also
benefit from the utility and coverage offered by satellite
telephones and data modems.
