GLOBALSTAR EXTENDS SATELLITE DATA SERVICE TO CENTRAL
AND SOUTH AMERICA
Venezuelan Ground Station
Enhancement to Allow Globalstar to Offer Expanded Simplex
Data Coverage throughout region.
Globalstar, the world‘s most widely used handheld
satellite phone and a provider of satellite voice and
data services to business, today announced that it will
offer simplex, or one-way, data services to its customers
throughout parts of the Caribbean, Central America and
the northern portion of South America, using its Venezuelan
gateway located near Caracas. Combined with the current
simplex coverage offered by two Globalstar gateways
in North America, this enhancement will greatly expand
the area currently served by the company’s simplex
data service.
The expansion is the result of a hardware upgrade to
the Venezuelan ground station or gateway that is operated
by Globalstar to provide satellite customers, access
to the ground based public telephone and data networks.
Globalstar simplex data service has already been available
in the U.S and Canada since 2003, and throughout all
of Europe and across the north Atlantic region since
earlier this year.
The Globalstar simplex data offering is a low cost,
one-way satellite data service that allows customers
to use Globalstar simplex modems and integrated solutions
to track mobile assets -- such as vehicles and marine
vessels -- using GPS or other location-based software.
Because of this, it is an ideal solution for marine
and fishing vessel monitoring applications. The Globalstar
simplex data service can also be used to monitor and
send information from a wide array of industrial and
security applications for fixed assets, such as environmental
measurements, utility meter readings, or the state of
various devices or instruments.
Using the Globalstar Satellite network and an approved
integrated simplex modem solution, companies will be
able to economically monitor their assets from virtually
anywhere within the newly expanded coverage area. The
data is sent back to a customer's monitoring facility
via Globalstar's constellation of low-earth-orbiting
satellites, so that information can be received at any
time from remote installations far beyond the reach
of ground-based communications systems.
“This investment, once again demonstrates our
commitment to providing Globalstar customers with a
low-cost simplex data option that will now be available
to areas across the northern portion of South America
and throughout parts of Central America, and the Caribbean,”
said Jay Monroe, CEO and Chairman of Globalstar LLC.
“It also re-emphasizes our commitment to providing
a low cost, satellite- based data acquisition tool for
industries that demand the ability to remotely monitor
assets such as tractor trailers, shipping containers
or infrastructure.”
“Additionally this is just the first installation
of several new appliqués, that will be installed
in the upcoming months, in order to provide simplex
data solutions by Globalstar and Globalstar independent
gateway operators around the world”, added Monroe.
Beginning in November, Globalstar de Venezuela will
begin conducting extensive customer field trials of
its simplex data offering, through the gateway near
Caracas, with full commercial service scheduled to start
later this year.
This service enhancement continues to demonstrate Globalstar’s
commitment to introducing new product and pricing solutions
designed to meet the dynamic requirements of the satellite
voice and data marketplace. |
