SATELLITE DATA BOOM EXPECTED IN SOUTH AMERICA
Installation of gateway appliqué expands simplex
data coverage throughout Peru and parts of western South
America
Globalstar, a world leader in providing mobile satellite
voice and data services to business, announced today
that its independent gateway operator in Peru, TE.SA.M
Peru SA, plans to offer simplex, or one-way, data services
to Globalstar customers throughout Peru and parts of
Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, northern Chile and
the Pacific coast maritime region.
The capability to offer simplex data service and solutions
is the result of additional hardware being added at
the ground station or satellite gateway operated by
TE.SA.M Peru SA. The satellite gateway is used to provide
Globalstar customers with access to ground based telephone
and data networks via the Globalstar satellite constellation.
Todays announcement plus the recent deployment
of simplex data service from our gateway in Venezuela,
demonstrate our continued commitment to introduce new
satellite data solutions, to meet the growing demands
of the South American marketplace, said Jay Monroe,
Chairman and CEO of Globalstar LLC. Mr. Monroe went
on to add, Simplex data is one of our fastest
growing services and with this newly expanded coverage,
we now anticipate seeing similar growth in the South
American market.
Globalstar has offered simplex data service in the
U.S and Canada since 2003, and throughout Europe, the
Middle East and across the north Atlantic region since
early 2005. It is one of the fastest growing company
segments with the number of Globalstar simplex data
subscribers increasing in 2005 by approximately 300%
to over 20,000 users. Globalstar recently announced
expansion of simplex data coverage into parts of Australia
and the Asia Pacific region. The Asset Intelligence
unit of GE's Equipment Services Business also selected
the Globalstar simplex data network for use with its
worldwide asset management services and solutions.
Globalstar simplex allows customers to track mobile
assets -- such as vehicles, tractor-trailers, railcars,
cargo containers and marine vessels, using GPS or other
location-based software. Because of this, it is an ideal
solution for various AVL, marine and fishing vessel
monitoring applications. The service can also be used
for a wide variety of industrial and security applications
to monitor and send information from fixed assets, such
as environmental measuring instruments and utility meters,
or report the state of various mobile devices and their
locations.
Using the Globalstar satellite network and an approved
integrated simplex modem solution, companies will be
able to economically monitor their assets from virtually
anywhere within the Globalstar simplex coverage area.
The data is sent back to a customer's control and monitoring
facility via the Globalstar constellation of low-earth-orbiting
satellites. This information can be received at any
time from remote installations far beyond the reach
of ground-based communications systems. Commencing in
the second quarter of 2006, TE.SA.M. Perú S.A.
plans to begin customer field trials of its simplex
data offering.
