BBC files TV reports via Inmarsat from mudslide disaster
in remote southern Leyte province of the Philippines
using HNS 9201 BGAN terminal .
The BBC has become the first news organization to file
TV reports using Inmarsat's BGAN mobile satellite service
and the new HNS 9201 terminal.
The Inmarsat Distribution Partner, Stratos Global,
helped the BBC to successfully transmit store-and-forward
broadcast news reports from the scene of the Philippines
mudslide disaster.
The BBC TV coverage of the recovery effort was the
first ever news report to be transmitted using Inmarsat
BGAN and the HNS 9201 terminal.
The new BGAN service is faster and uses lighter and
smaller satellite terminals than those offered by any
other mobile satellite service.
The HNS 9201 terminal has the highest bandwidth capability
of the Inmarsat BGAN range of portable devices. It about
the size of a small laptop PC and can be set up and
shut down in minutes, without special technical expertise.
The HNS 9201 has received 'class one' approval from
Inmarsat, which means the terminal is capable of delivering
data speeds up to 492kbps.
The mudslide disaster struck the Guinsaugon village
in the Philippines' southern Leyte Province on February
17, and a BBC journalist and cameraman began reporting
from the affected area on two days later.
Because normal communications methods are not an option
in this remote region, reporters have been relying on
satellite links to send their reports.
The village is located more than six hours from the
nearest airport in Leyte's provincial capital of Tacloban,
which is nearly 650kms (400 miles) from the Philippines
capital Manila.
"The BBC's success in using BGAN this week demonstrates
how the service allows lightweight newsgathering in
remote regions, with the minimum of equipment. This
enables newsgathering crews to file from areas that
have little or no telecommunications infrastructure.
"BGAN's high-speed IP service helps the BBC deliver
content as quickly as possible to audiences worldwide."
BGAN is ideal for broadcasters who need dependable,
secure voice and broadband access in locations where
terrestrial or cellular communications are non-existent
or unreliable.
