Everest
teams relay summit reports via Inmarsat BGAN
BGAN is being put through its paces at high altitude
as climbers use it to send back words and pictures from
the top of the world - Mount Everest.
The professional climbing guides organization, Adventure
Consultants, is using BGAN terminals to relay video,
photos and web blogs from the slopes of the famous Himalayan
peak.
Adventure Consultants provides high-altitude guiding
for various expeditions in the Himalayas and South America.
The latest expedition to be supervised is Team Canada.
At least nine members of the team were reported to have
reached the summit on May 23.
In a separate initiative involving BGAN, American climber
Lance Trumbull sent back the first video to be taken
at Mount Everest's summit this year.
He beamed the video footage from base camp using his
BGAN terminal during the Everest Climb for Peace initiative.
A 15-year-old Australian, Christopher Harris, supported
by his father Richard and team member Michael Dillon,
has also been scaling Everest equipped with a BGAN terminal
supplied by Inmarsat service provider TC Communications
of Australia.
Christopher's bid ended on May 23 when he had problems
breathing at about 25,000 feet above sea level. The
team doctor advised him not to continue.
Christopher climbed Australia's Mount Kosciuszko (7,310
feet) when he was only eight. He went on to scale Mount
Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (19,340 feet) aged 12, Mount
Elbrus in Russia (18,506 feet) at 13 and Mount Aconcagua
in Argentina (22,840 feet) in January this year.
