boosts Inmarsat satcoms support for army and navy
The Canadian Department of National Defence (DND)
is boosting communications for its navy and army personnel
operating overseas with Inmarsat technology.
Distribution Partner Stratos Global, one of our leading
Inmarsat Distribution Partners in North America, has
been selected to provide Inmarsat leased satellite capacity
services in support of land and sea-based operations.
Enhanced leasing
The three-year award, a renewal of an existing contract,
is worth an estimated CAN$25 million (US$21.3 million)
and includes an Enhanced Leasing Service (ELS), which
provides twice the available bandwidth on a standard
leased satellite channel, allowing for advanced data
and voice communications
ELS uses advanced modem modulation techniques to increase
throughput on a standard 100 kHz Inmarsat leased satellite
channel from 64 kbps to 128 kbps without the need for
additional space segment.
Bandwidth doubled
It means military the Canadian Navyfleets have will
have twice the available bandwidth to support voice,
data and fax communications, including ship-based crew
calling and e-mail, using Inmarsat-B satellite systems.
In addition, ELS allows multiple terminals to simultaneously
share a single leased channel, in any combination of
data rates up to 128 kbps, making it easier for troops
in the field to phone or e-mail home.
Additional capacity
The award - a National Individual Standing Offer (NISO)
- will allow the renewal of longer-term leased capacity
services that the Canadian DND already has with Stratos,
as well as providing for additional capacity needs.
It also includes two one-year options for extension
after the initial three-year term.
