R-BGAN
terminals in Arabian desert will keep world in touch
with cross-country motor rally
A base camp built among sand dunes deep in the Arabian
desert will be the mobile communications centre for
this year's UAE Desert Challenge - with mobile satellite
links provided by Inmarsat.
This is the fourth year Inmarsat has sponsored the
international cross-country rally, which takes place
from 9 to 14 November.
The event sees a powerful line-up of cars, motorcycles
and trucks tackling some of the most demanding and spectacular
desert terrain in the Middle East before the survivors
reach the finish line at Dubai International Marine
Club.
Inmarsat is providing three R-BGAN terminals and one
GAN terminal - which will be set up at the base camp.
The Inmarsat R-BGANs will enable the organizers to
send results speedily through to its headquarters, while
the journalists covering the event will use the terminals
to file copy and send pictures to their newsdesks around
the world. The GAN terminal will be used for voice and
fax communications.
The desert base - called the 'Bivouac' - is located
this year at a new site on the Moreeb Hill. The site
includes a 60 degree slipface on a sand dune that will
be used as a hill climb in the rally.
Inmarsat's regional director for the Middle East, Africa
and Central Asia, Samer Halawi, said: "The Bivouac
is in the middle of nowhere. Mobiles barely work there.
The Inmarsat equipment demonstrates how crucial mobile
satellite communications are in remote areas."
