Africa Navy chooses Inmarsat Fleet F77 connectivity
The South African Navy has chosen to fit Thrane &
Thrane Fleet F77 terminals to its newly-acquired Valour
class frigates as part of a major modernization programme.
Service provider Pertec, the South African representative
of manufacturer Thrane & Thrane, was contracted
to supply its TT-3084A terminals to four of the new
frigates plus two support ships.
Steve Smith, Pertec's commercial shipping and offshore
manager, said: "The South African Navy had utilized
the Inmarsat Fleet F77 service on a temporary basis during the
delivery voyages from the German shipyards.
"The satisfaction with the product - and the service
obtained from Pertec - certainly influenced the decision
to permanently implement the Fleet F77 systems into
the frigates and two other support vessels.
"Other influencing factors were the quick availability
of the equipment from Thrane & Thrane of Denmark
and the electronic support and installation service
we could offer.
"The fact that the antenna unit for the Thrane
& Thrane Fleet F77 product is designed and manufactured
right here in South Africa is a collateral benefit."
The South African Navy uses the terminals for an array
of Inmarsat Fleet services, but the primary use is to support
day-to-day non-combatant operations of the vessels via
telephone, fax and e-mail.
Steve says that once the systems are fully active onboard
the frigates, facilities for crew members to make calls
and send e-mails to friends and family could also be
introduced.
"The addition of the Fleet F77 terminals enhances
the South African Navy's usage of Inmarsat services.
Previously Inmarsat-C systems were used purely for operational
activities," he said.
