Young
scientists use Inmarsat BGAN in Greenland climate study
A team of young scientists is being supported by Inmarsat
to carry out a climate change study in the ice-packed
interior of Greenland.
The project has been supplied with a Hughes 9201 BGAN
terminal and free airtime by Inmarsat so the scientists
can send data, post pictures and update their web blogs.
The team will also be able to stay in touch with media
organizations around the world by phone, e-mail and
video link. The initiative is supported by both Inmarsat
and the European Space Agency, and is being sponsored
by the international ice cream brand, Ben & Jerry's.
Every year, Ben & Jerry' s Climate Change College,
a collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund, offers
six young 'ambassadors' the opportunity to learn about
climate change. They take part in a 10-day field trip
to the Arctic and must develop a national awareness
campaign using a mix of e-learning, lectures, and workshops.
On April 27, the team set off for Greenland led by
Marc Cornelissen, the polar explorer and environmentalist.
Once there, the team are supporting the European Space
Agency's Cryosat project to provide important data about
the condition of the northern ice cap.
A Cryosat earth observation spacecraft, scheduled for
launch in 2009, will map changes in ice thickness over
the Earth with unprecedented accuracy using sophisticated
radar equipment.
To underpin the data to be gathered by Cryosat, the
students will dig snowpits 1 metre square to analyze
the composition of the different snow layers.
An aircraft carrying the same radar instrument as Cryosat
will fly over the pits. Comparison of the students'
data from the ground will teach scientists how to exploit
Cryosat fully when it is launched.
Inmarsat's Pelle Maerkedahl Larsen explained: "We
are eager to support this influential campaign, helping
to provide important data about climate change.
Opinion leaders
"It is also an opportunity for Inmarsat to show
the portability and high speed of the BGAN service.
We anticipate BGAN will be used for videoconferencing
with opinion leaders around the world."
