Greenland Explorer and Environmentalist Praises Inmarsat BGAN During Climate Change Study
Explorer and environmentalist uses BGAN during climate change study and praises its effectiveness for voice calls, sending video, posting photos and updating web blogs.
Inmarsat BGAN is totally cool at polar latitudes, according to explorer and environmentalist Marc Cornelissen, who used the service during a climate change study in Greenland. Marc led a team of young scientists on a 10-day field trip to support the European Space Agency's Cryosat project.
Cryosat, scheduled for launch in 2009, will provide important data about the condition of the Arctic ice cap.
Web blogs
The team used an HNS 9201 BGAN terminal, made by Hughes Network Systems, to send video and data, post photos and update web blogs. Marc said: "We used the new BGAN for live video feeds and even live TV from the ice cap.
"This tool is opening up unique potential for the polar world it would be interesting to see how far we can push it."
Network coverage
The BGAN equipment proved sufficiently robust and effective and, according to Cornelissen, achieved "excellent network coverage" at 70 degrees north.
He was also impressed by the voice telephone capability.
"The sound quality was brilliant," he said, "especially compared to Iridium."
For video, a MacBook Pro laptop was used to convert the signal from the video camera into a real-time Windows Media stream.
Video transfer
Cornelissen confirmed that most of the video transfer was streamed, not transferred as an FTP or an email attachment.
The trip was supported by the ice cream manufacturer Ben and Jerry's through its Climate Change College (CCC), in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund. The equipment and airtime for the expedition was provided by Inmarsat service provider Radio Holland.
Live broadcast
On one occasion the team used Inmarsat BGAN to transmit video images for live broadcast on Good Morning Netherlands, a Dutch early morning TV programme.
Pelle Maerkedahl Larsen, Inmarsat market development manager, land mobile solutions, said: "For anyone organising a project such as the CCC, publicity is a key success factor.
"Besides providing the expedition with broadband data and voice, BGAN enabled Marc to broadcast live video and host video conferences with policy makers and news media around the world, raising the profile of the CCC enormously.
