Norwegian Team Utilizes Inmarsat BGAN to Aid Landmine Clearance
Norwegian aid team is using BGAN to help clear lethal landmines in Sri Lanka in the wake of a conflict that has claimed the lives of 64,000 people over the past 20 years.
The Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) charity has been working to clear landmines from war-ravaged parts of the country since the ceasefire in 2002.
It has tested the Nera WorldPro 1000 BGAN terminal for logistical support and says it sees great potential for the use of BGAN in its work.
Simple to use
Frederik Holmegaard, mechanical de-mining manager in Sri Lanka for NPA, says: "Nera's BGAN terminal is very simple to use and it takes less than five minutes to set up a communications link from any location."
Holmegaard is leading the mine-sweeping team in Kilinochi, northern Sri Lanka, where mobile phone coverage is patchy and satellite communication is essential to stay reliably in touch.
Even in the capital Colombo, where land telephone lines exist, communications are frequently difficult, says Holmegaard.
Impressive voice quality
"The quality of voice calls on the Nera World Pro 1000 is impressive. They are coming through very clearly," he adds.
"Also, I am surprised about how stable the communication is when I am surfing the internet, and sending emails, text messages and so on."
NPA has removed 30,000 landmines from the ground over the past three-and-a-half years.
Victims of war
Hundreds of thousands of mines were laid by both sides in the long-running conflict between government forces and the Tamil Tiger rebels, on jungle tracks and around plantations, wells, highways and villages.
Thousands of the more than 64,000 victims of the war have been killed by mines, with thousands more maimed for life.
