Inmarsat BGAN Supports Phase One Relief in Lebanon
Inmarsat has been appointed by the United Nations as its lead telecoms provider during the first stage of its vital relief effort in bomb-damaged Lebanon.
Inmarsat is deploying its BGAN terminals - the HNS 9201 and the Thrane and Thrane Explorer 500 - under a new modus operandi now being implemented by the United Nations (UN) for emergency response situations.
When Inmarsat arrived in Lebanon on August 9, it began by offering ad hoc telephone calls to refugees in Beirut and Saida.
Key phases
Now, under the United Nation's new approach, whereby organisations are allocated specific responsibility for key phases of any emergency response, Inmarsat has been appointed as the principal telecoms provider during the first 30 days of the UN-led relief effort in Lebanon.
A first official telecom centre serving the UN and other non-governmental agencies - providing internet, phone, fax and IT support - was opened on August 20 in Saida at a base run by the UN's Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha).
Telecom Centre
A second telecom centre was then opened on August 21 in Tyre, using BGAN, to support the World Food Programme (WFP), Unicef and Ocha.
Inmarsat says that internet and phone facilities are also being provided to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) operating in Srifa and Ayat Ash Shaab in southern Lebanon.
