Inmarsat-3
IOR plays key role in pioneering flight across Africa
to test navigation system.
The navigation transponder on board
the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) Inmarsat-3 (I-3) satellite
played a key role during a recent pioneering test flight
across the widest part of Africa using a new European
flight safety system.
The flight tested the European Geostationary
Navigation Overlay Service (Egnos) - a service which
is being developed jointly by the European Space Agency
(ESA), the European Commission and the Eurocontrol safety
organization.
An ATR 42 airplane was fitted to receive
and analyse the Egnos test signal which uses the I-3
to broadcast differential global positioning system
(GPS) data that enhances the accuracy of the basic GPS.
The test flight took place across the
widest part of Africa - a 7,000 km journey from Dakar
in Senegal to Mombasa in Kenya using an aircraft provided
by the African air safety organization AESCNA.
An Egnos receiver inside the plane
translated signals from the antenna mounted on the roof.
Computers connected to the receiver converted this into
information that helped pilots in their flight operations.
There were no hitches during the journey,
which was the first Egnos test from west to east Africa.
The
ESA says the system can help to reinforce air traffic
safety and make approaches with vertical guidance for
safe landings. This should help prevent what is one
of the major causes of accidents - namely ground collision
during landing.
