TSF
puts Sri Lankan families affected by tsunami in touch
with loved ones
Inmarsat-sponsored aid agency Télécom
Sans Frontières (TSF) has helped more than 6,550
Sri Lankan families - since the tsunami first cut its
path of destruction across the Indian Ocean region on
December 26.
In Sri Lanka, TSF has provided more
than 22,000 minutes of communication through emergency
mobile and satellite phone lines.
In its latest report - issued 100 days
after the devastating tsunami first struck - TSF describes
how it helped a seven-year-old girl.
The little girl was found in ruins
near the Buddhist temple in Matara, on the southern
tip of the island. She was one of the first people discovered
safe and well after the disaster - and is now living
in an orphanage.
TSF was able to put her, and her aunt,
in touch with her mother - who is working as a housemaid
in Beirut but unable to return.
TSF's humanitarian telephone operations
have meant that many other people have been able to
reach friends and relatives. The organization¿s
services are carried out in refugee camps, temples,
schools and public places - using Inmarsat mini-M, GAN
and Regional BGAN.
Now that the mobile networks - both
GSM and landlines - have been established, the emergency
phase of TSF's work in Sri Lanka has now finished.
But
the aid agency is continuing to work with people in
refugee camps and isolated villages across the island
to put them in touch with friends and family abroad
- who can provide much-needed financial assistance to
help them rebuild their lives.
