Inmarsat
supports Surinam flood relief
An Inmarsat-sponsored aid agency has mobilized a team
to help thousands of people affected by floods in Surinam,
South America.
Torrential rains began on May 1, affecting southern
and central Surinam and causing several major rivers
to flood 30,000 sq km of land, affecting 37,000 people.
Telecommunications infrastructures have been damaged
in several regions but access to affected zones has
been made difficult by the rains.
Surinam requested assistance from the United Nations
and the international community to co-ordinate and strengthen
its relief efforts.
Inmarsat's aid agency, based in Nicaragua, and the
Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs,
based in Panama, deployed resources on Friday, May 12,
to strengthen relief teams with communications and IT
technical support.
Working for United Nation¿s Disaster Assessment
Co-ordination (Undac) organization, Inmarsat installed
a telecoms centre at the heart of Undac's co-ordinating
centre and this was connected to the Internet to strengthen
the UN's capabilities.
An Inmarsat spokesman said: "We made available
Inmarsat mini-M satellite priority phone lines to facilitate
communication and exchange of information between crews
in Paramaribo and abroad, but also to enable communication
with assessment teams sent to the affected zones. We
also installed a wi-fi network at the co-ordinating
centre to facilitate internal exchange of information
between the different agencies involved."
On May 14 Inmarsat installed a server that centralized
shared information and simplified access to crucial
data. Inmarsat is also assisting the United Nations
and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), such as the
UK's MapAction, by helping to configure their equipment.
