Inmarsat's
forthcoming SwiftBroadband service will be used to provide
a revolutionary in-flight mobile phone service for air
travellers
British and Portuguese airlines BMI and TAP are gearing
up to provide a revolutionary in-flight mobile phone
service for air travellers - via Inmarsat's forthcoming
SwiftBroadband service.
OnAir, the partnership between aircraft manufacturer
Airbus and aeronautical satcoms service provider Sita,
will use Inmarsat's SwiftBroadband to deliver the innovative
new service.
BMI and TAP's decision to offer in-flight calls represents
an important building block in the development of a
new market for Inmarsat.
OnAir estimates that the market for in-flight mobile
telephone will be more than 700 million passengers by
2009.
The airlines are preparing to trial the service in
late 2006 - BMI on an Airbus A320 and TAP on an Airbus
A321.
BMI says its target market will be both business and
leisure travellers to European destinations, with TAP
focusing primarily on business passengers in Europe.
Inmarsat SwiftBroadband will be powered by the same
new generation Inmarsat-4 (I-4) satellites that will
deliver Inmarsat's pioneering Broadband Global Area
Network (BGAN) high-speed voice and data communications
to enterprise users from the end of 2005.
The Swiftbroadband offering is a scaleable solution
supporting a range of applications, including voice
calls and text messages to passengers' own mobile phones,
as well as broadband data connectivity for PDAs or laptops.
OnAir says the new offering opens up an exciting era
for business travellers, enabling them to use their
own GSM cellular and GPRS mobile phones.
