R-BGAN
terminal plays integral role in washingtonpost.com mission
across Russia
A journalist and a photographer on
a special assignment for The Washington Post's website
- washingtonpost.com - are travelling across Russia
to chronicle how life in the country has changed over
the past decade.
Inmarsat's R-BGAN terminal will aid
this mission by allowing Lisa Dickey to file stories
and David Hillegas to upload photos to document their
journey.
The trip, which starts on September
1, will be presented as a travel blog, The Russian Chronicles
- Ten Years On, on the US newspaper's website.
Every day for 11 weeks, the R-BGAN
terminal will enable Dickey and Hillegas to post stories,
photos and sound bites from a journey across the whole
of Russia - starting in the eastern port city of Vladivostok
and ending in the historic imperial capital of St. Petersburg.
The aim is to give readers a real-time,
on-the-ground look at Russian life.
The
trip replicates a similar one Dickey took in 1995. Back
then, Dickey and photographer Gary Matoso struggled
to send even miniscule amounts of data - using a clunky,
prototype digital camera and early web technology. The
average total upload was only about 400 kilobytes and
the process sometimes took as long as eight hours.
Dickey says it will be a huge relief
to have the R-BGAN terminal this time around. "In
1995, we could only send updates once a week, because
the process was so onerous," she says. "Now,
we know we can send an update every day, no matter where
we are."
