R-BGAN photos show charities at work in West Africa
Professional photographer Suzanne Porter was able
to send stunning images of charity work in West Africa
using an Inmarsat R-BGAN terminal provided by Inmarsat.
Suzanne spent four months in various locations, recording
in pictures the work of the charities Sight Savers in
Sierra Leone and the Cameroon, and Water Aid in Nigeria
and Burkina Faso. She also paid a return visit to friends
in Mali to record the predicament of the nomadic Tuareg
people.
In the Cameroon and Sierra Leone Sightsavers have been
enabling cataract operations to alleviate blindness
in those countries.
Water Aid is co-ordinating various projects to develop
safe drinking water and sanitation in a number of countries
around the world.
Suzanne's photos have been used for various promotional
activities by both charities, such as in publications
and on websites.
Her images are often required at a moment's notice,
hence the value of having an Inmarsat R-BGAN satellite
modem to e-mail them from remote locations where there
is little or no other means to access the Internet or
send e-mail.
Suzanne said: "It proved very helpful having the
R-BGAN terminal because it was so easy to set up and
also very portable. The battery life was considerable.
In fact, with a second back up battery I would not have
needed to re-charge for a number of weeks.
"During the trip it came in useful on a number
of occasions. I was able to send pictures taken for
Water Aid to the World Economic Forum in Davos in January
where water was one of the issues being discussed. I
also sent high resolution images for a potential full-page
spread in The Times."
Suzanne returned to Mali to further document the Tuareg's
lifestyle and thereby help raise awareness about an
endangered Berber ethnic group that has inhabited the
Sahara desert for centuries.
Suzanne added:"The satellite technology intrigued
many people in remote locations who saw me using it,
but there were also people who already had mobile phones
and, some, like one of my drivers, had e-mail accounts
- so they understood the basic concept of what I was
using the equipment for."
Inmarsat's Pelle Maerkedahl Larsen said: "This
is an excellent demonstration of the power of immediacy
which R-BGAN provides users with. Thanks to Inmarsat
R-BGAN, Suzanne's photos reached the right audiences
at the right time - a capability which is priceless
in the media world of today."
