Major Far Eastern Ship Management Company Equips Ships
with Iridium Satellite Communications Systems
Great Circle Shipping has joined the growing number
of shipping fleets switching to Iridium satellite communications
systems for inexpensive global voice and data transmission
between ship and shore.
The Bangkok-based ship management company is fitting
34 of its bulk cargo carriers with Thrane & Thrane
maritime Iridium terminals under a service contract
with Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel).
The systems will be used for the ship’s business
and crew calling via voice and e-mail.
“Iridium’s global satellite service provides
a reliable and cost-effective solution for our ship-to-shore
e-mail and calling requirements,” said Jaipal
Mansukhani, technical director of Great Circle Shipping.
“Iridium’s maritime business continues
to experience rapid growth,” said Don Thoma, executive
vice president for Iridium Satellite. “Our maritime
subscriber base has grown 30 percent in 2005.”
Masagos Zulkifli, vice president of SingTel Satellite,
said, “We are proud to have been chosen as the
maritime communications provider for Great Circle Shipping
together with our partner, Iridium Satellite. Their
endorsement of our services boosts our position as a
leading maritime communications service provider in
the Asia Pacific region.”
